Wedding Makeup: Yes, It Is a Big Deal!
Here’s how to approach your makeup before, during and after your wedding day
Your wedding makeup is not just about looking beautiful for a few hours. It needs to last through photos, hugs, tears, dancing, eating, kissing and an entire day that can easily stretch to 16–20 hours. Not to mention you’ll be looking at those wedding photos for many many years to come. It is designed differently from everyday makeup and understanding that process will make the entire experience smoother and much more enjoyable.
Before the Wedding: Preparation Matters More Than You Think
This is particularly important if you’re not much of a makeup wearer.
Wedding makeup that is designed to last all day needs to be applied in carefully layered stages. Even when the end result appears soft, glowy, and natural, there are often more products and more reinforcement involved than you may be used to.
If you’re more of a tinted moisturiser kind of person, bear in mind that what you wear on your wedding day may feel heavier than your everyday makeup. It may look slightly heavier to you initially as well. This doesn’t mean it will look heavy in photographs.
Bridal makeup is specifically designed to perform under different conditions, lighting and the durability level is of utmost importance.
Your makeup artist will work with you to ensure you still feel like yourself, but understand that wedding makeup comes with a little extra reinforcement.
Skincare is equally important and should be discussed during your trial. Skin preparation takes time.
A skincare routine does not transform skin overnight, so if you’re having a trial, book it with enough time to make adjustments. If you aren’t having a trial, chat with your makeup artist a couple of months before the wedding so you know exactly what your skin needs.
The truth is simple: makeup only sits beautifully on skin that has been properly prepared.
Be Careful With Inspiration
If you decide to go for a lipstick with a bit more impact than you normally wear because you’ve seen a gorgeous image online, practise wearing it beforehand. Same goes with a stronger, more contoured eye. Your wedding day is not the day to introduce a completely different version of yourself.
The same applies to overall makeup inspiration. If you are usually a very light makeup wearer, look for inspiration that feels similar to your own style. Focus on details such as eye shape, softness or glow rather than dramatic transformations.
When you go to your makeup artist, use inspiration images directly from their portfolio wherever possible. Showing a makeup artist work created by somebody else can be a little bit of a faux pas. Every artist has their own style, products, techniques and signature finish.

Makeup imagery online has become heavily filtered, AI-edited, and altered. Skin texture disappears, colours shift and many images simply don’t represent real makeup. Pinterest is wonderful for flowers, dresses or nail inspiration, but when it comes to faces, approach it with caution.
Trust the Process
When meeting your makeup artist, tell her what you like and explain your desired end result. Then allow her to work out how to get there.
Try not to dictate exactly how your makeup should be applied. Makeup artists train extensively, understand skin types, products, longevity, and technique, and carry an entire kit designed to solve problems before they happen.
Trust the process.
On the Wedding Day
Your makeup artist will provide timings and schedules for the morning. Trust those timings.
She knows how long she needs and will usually include buffer time and touch-up time. This is standard procedure in bridal makeup because rushing never creates the best result.
For touch-ups during the day, it is essential to have:
- Your lipstick
- Cotton buds
- A foundation powder
Your makeup artist can organise this in advance, using shades matched during your trial or products you already own.
Your bridal party should have these essentials too.
Bridal makeup is designed to last, but weddings involve movement and emotion. There are hugs, laughter, kisses, dancing and happy tears — and all of these things can affect makeup.
The Truth About Tears
Most professional makeup products today are incredibly durable.
Many are water-resistant, splash-resistant, and some foundations are even designed to survive swimming.
But tears are different. Tears contain salt and enzymes and can affect the skin’s oil balance. Excessive crying combined with rubbing and tissue blotting will eventually break down makeup. No makeup artiston earth — regardless of talent — can create makeup that survives continuous rubbing and heavy crying untouched.
If tears begin:
Look upwards, use a gentle tapping motion and have cotton buds nearby (hide them in your bouquet!)
A useful trick is gently pinching the outer corner of your nose just beneath the tear ducts. This can help stop tears before they fully develop.
Avoid wiping and rubbing wherever possible.
A small bottle of micellar water can also be helpful for emergency clean-ups if mascara starts to move.
Why False Lashes Can Be Your Best Friend
False lashes can be fantastic for bridal makeup.
They come in different densities and styles and can be applied in ways that still look beautifully natural. One of their biggest benefits is reducing dependence on mascara, because mascara is often the first thing affected by excessive tears.
However, there is one important consideration:
If you choose to have a lash lift and tint before your wedding, false lashes generally cannot sit properly on top.
Think of it like trying to attach straight hair extensions onto tightly curled hair — the structure simply doesn’t match.
So generally it’s one or the other:
False lashes or a lash lift.
Your makeup artist will guide you towards what suits you best.
Trust the Adjustments
If something during your trial didn’t sit perfectly, say it.Your makeup artist has an entire arsenal of products and techniques to adjust things.
Trials are not intended to create a flawless final wedding-day application. They are there to learn your preferences, understand your skin and fine-tune the process.
Very often, wedding-day makeup looks 100 times more polished than the trial because everything has already been learned.
After the Wedding: The Photos Last Forever
Long after the flowers have gone and the cake has been eaten,your photos remain.
Your makeup artist aims to create something timeless — something you’ll look back at ten years from now and think:
“My God, I looked amazing.”
Not:
“Why did I have those brows?”
Or:
“Why was that trend everywhere?”
Trends come and go.
Timeless beauty lasts.
